The Manukau Youth Orchestra was established in 1974. We provide affordable music tuition for 100 young people and run a total of seven bands and orchestras based in Manurewa.
The orchestra & band subscription is $6 for the year, the three day orchestra camp costs $20 and concerts are always free. Cost of music lessons in our three schools varies according to funding. Contact the Musical Director and Instrument Tutor Joseph Allan for more information or to join any of the orchestras or bands.
The senior orchestra practises Tuesday 6:30pm to 8pm at Hillpark Primary School in Manurewa. A three day camp is held every year to learn new music. The senior orchestra performs three major concerts each year and one or two informal garden concerts. Orchestra members are aged 8 to 18 years. In December 2017 we started the Manurewa Mariachi Project which we plan to run in the summer months each year.
This band is new for 2016. For now it is a stage band or jazz band with the usual line up of 5 saxes, 4 trumpets, 4 trombones and a rhythm section. The band rehearses every Monday 8pm-9pm at Waimahia Intermediate straight after the MYSB rehearsal. The vision is for this band is to combine on special occasions with our top level string players to perform the lush studio orchestra arrangements of days gone by (think Nelson Riddle, Duke Ellington, Ella Fitzgerald).
The band was established on 17 August 2015 and rehearses every Monday 6:30pm-8pm at Waimahia Intermediate. We play a mix of broadway, latin, jazz and movie tunes. Many of the players are from our band programme at Waimahia Intermediate School. Like the orchestra a three day camp is held every year to learn new music. It is a pathway for brass and wind players to the Manukau Youth Orchestra and the Manukau Youth Jazz Orchestra.
This is our junior orchestra is for younger string players and rehearses on Tuesdays from 5:30pm to 6:30pm at Hillpark Primary School in Manurewa. Members range from 7 to 12 years of age and have been learning about one year. Te Toi Taiohi Orchestra is open to anyone of similar age and we would love to have more players in the group (on violin, viola, cello or double bass). Please contact Joseph Allan for more information.
The orchestra runs teaching programmes at three schools in Manurewa. There are places for 40 students at each school and we currently teach a total of 100 students how to play a musical instrument. We have two string orchestra programmes at Manurewa Central School and Hillpark Primary School where we teach violin, viola, cello & double bass. At Waimahia Intermediate School we have our band programme teaching flute, clarinet, saxophone, trumpet & trombone.
All students have half hour group lessons during school time, are part of the school band/orchestra and are provided with music and an instrument. While students may be taken out of academic classes to for their lessons is important note there are so many benefits of learning a musical instrument. We have created "How to Play Violin and Cello" pages and music reading games to help beginner students. All are available free internet resources.
A group for beginner violin, viola, cello and double bass players. The string orchestra starts straight after school on Tuesdays from 3pm to 4pm at Hillpark Primary School in Manurewa. Players range from 7 to 10 years of age and are mainly from Hillpark School with some players from nearby schools such as The Gardens School and St Anne's Catholic School. It takes about 10 minutes to set up so students from nearby schools that finish before 3pm usually get there in plenty of time ready to play the first note. We also run orchestras/bands at the other schools but they are not open to outside students at this stage. Please contact Joseph Allan for more information.
